Virgin Media Circuit Flap

At 10:31am this morning, we noticed one of our metro network interconnects between Bolton and Manchester, provided by Virgin Media, flapped.

We have reported the fault to Virgin Media and are awaiting their investigation.


Our network runs via a redundant ring of interconnects from multiple vendors and any traffic on this affected link will automatically re-route via the opposite direction in the ring.

Level3 IPv4 Connectivity Issue (18/June/2015)

Our monitoring systems alerted us to IPv4 connectivity issues at 6:32pm this evening.  This was traced to our connection with Level3, Inc.

It appears to have stopped passing IPv4 traffic due to a routing loop internally within Level3’s network.

We have shutdown our connectivity with them and raised a trouble ticket.

All routes will have reconverged via alternative paths.

DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail)

DKIM uses cryptographic authentication to provide a method for validating a message’s identity that has been associated with any given sender. It is essentially an email validation system designed to detect email spoofing by providing a mechanism that allows receiving mail exchangers to check that incoming mail is authorised by the authoring domain’s administrators and that the email headers have not been modified during transport. A digital signature included with the message can be validated by the recipient using the signer’s public key published in DNS for the domain.

Some volume freemail providers (Gmail, Hotmail, AOL etc) can sometimes baulk when receiving non-authenticated messages. To resolve this issue, Netnorth’s community mail servers support DKIM signing of outgoing emails on a per-domain opt-in basis. Please contact us to subscribe to this service for your hosted domains.

BOL2 Power Outage (18th June 2015)

We experienced another power outage of phase L3 in our BOL2 datacentre this morning at 3:09am.

Electricity Northwest are currently on-site tracing an underground cable fault.

It is hoped it will be within a section that can be isolated to restore power to the building.

The datacentre is currently running from generated power, and no outages are expected.

Staff are onsite monitoring the generators to ensure continued service.
