Cisco Switch Failure – DS-173 – 9/Sep/2024

At approximately 6:07pm, we were alerted to a Cisco Switch failure of DS-173 on part of our older core network. A simultaneous dual fan failure caused the device to power down after 30 seconds.

We arrived on site and migrated all affected ports on DS-173 to our newer core network, and repaired the segment of core network which was affecting other items in BOL8 datacentre.

Customers connected to our newer core network were unaffected.

Customers in BOL23 datacentre on older core network were unaffected.

We restored the old core network elements at approximately 6:25pm.

Port moves for directly attached ports from DS-173 took place between 6:25pm and 6:50pm.

Due to an increase in fan failures on this particular model of switch, this switch had been inspected only this morning and was reporting full fan redundancy.

We will speed up our planned port migrations to the newer core network which has greater resilience and no ring topology.
